The Blog is Back! First Race of 2018- Daytona Half Marathon

I did this race a couple years ago and had an awesome time and it was also my first half marathon so I figured I'd go back and see if I could improve my time while getting a little jump on triathlon season since it won't start for a couple more months. I was pretty excited heading into the race since I have been running a good bit all winter with weekly mileage ranging from 21-42 miles with a few 14-15 mile days in there.

We drove down early Sunday morning, so I did my normal pre-race nutrition and headed down to the race. I got a my packet and did a nice and easy 20 minute warm up run in and headed to the start of the race, I ran a a 1:41:16 in training a month earlier so the plan was to break 1:40. They had a 1:40 pacer so I figured it would help with my pacing to run with him.

The gun went off and we had a small group of five in our group and started clicking off miles. The first 5 miles went by really fast and I was feeling great, our pacer was a little hit and miss with his staying steady and kept surging. Everything was going great until we made it to the first intercoastal bridge crossing around mile 7. My stomach started feeling a little uneasy but I figured I'd push through it and hope it would go away, we made it to the turnaround and started back to the speedway. We made it back to the bridge which was at the 15k mark and I started to lose the pacing group and my heart dropped a little and my legs got pretty heavy which makes me think I didn't consume enough calories during the race. I did a gel at the 10k mark and that was pretty much it so I'll need to revisit this for next time. Needless to say this ruined my pace and overall time but you live and learn. The official time was 1:41:25, so just shy of a PR.

5k- 23:18
5 mile- 37:32
10k- 46:45
15k- 1:10:57
10 mile- 1:16:10
1/2 marathon- 1:41:25

2/25 Age Group

My wife ran her first half marathon and beat her goal of 2:10 with running a 2:08 so she was able to check that off her list. So I'm back to training and getting ready for triathlon season and the River Run. Until next time!

And so it begins...

So after talking to a fellow triathlete over some Starbucks one evening I thought it'd be a good idea to start a blog to reflect on all the up's and down's, highlights and lowlights of everyday triathlon training and racing. Here goes nothing!

Rocketman Olympic+ Triathlon

Since the last race I've put much more running training in my schedule along with some very hard efforts on the bike. Due to work I wasn't able to get down as early as I wanted to the day before the race to get my packet and check my bike in so I had to do everything the morning of which didn't allow me to get any warm up in other than the one mile hike from parking to transition. The wind was insane the morning of the race coming straight off the ocean which meant we were going to have a direct head wind the first half of the bike course. With how the course was set up you weren't able to see the swim course until it was your wave to start and the walked you down a set of steps into the water. First couple steps into the water there were giant roots and the water was only waist deep. I was in the first wave of the Olympic+ distance but the fifth overall wave out. The course looked very short and I could see people standing at the turn buoy of half iron course (Yes! ...

San Marco Wine & Chocolate 5k

Just sounded like a fun race, so we signed up to check it out. The weather was looking pretty bad as we were heading to the race and only got worse as we waited for it to start. I was already feeling a little under the weather but since we already paid for it I made sure we were going to run to earn our finisher wine glass. The bottom dropped out about .25 mile into the race and never let up. Ended up just being a miserable race and I just wanted to finished so I could go back home.
